The bow (of a violin) can be seen as a sort of human (musical) breath.
When it is drawn across a string or strings (to create music)--there is a need to "not cut off" the last note---to ensure that there is enough breath (bowing room) to complete the musical phrase.
If, for some reason, we run out of bow---so that we cannot complete all the notes in the phrase---we will cause the bow to go in another direction (which is like taking another breath--- rather than running out of air and evoking a devoicing sound).

This is a really neat way of looking at this! Thanks Joy! I'm sure your performance was stunning!
